The High Representative of the EU for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell announced today that Kosovo and Serbia have reached an agreement on the acceptance of mutual identification documents.

Through a status on the social network “Twitter”, Josep Borell announces that through the dialogue mediated by the European Union, Serbia and Kosovo have accepted movement with the documents of the respective countries.

“Kosova Serbs, like all citizens of Kosova, will be able to travel freely between Kosovo and Serbia using their identity cards. The EU just received a guarantee from Prime Minister Kurti for this result. This is a European solution! We congratulate both leaders for this decision and leadership”, the announcement said.

As part of efforts to find a solution, Washington’s envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, and the EU’s envoy for dialogue, Miroslav Lajcak, stayed in Pristina and Belgrade this week where they met with political leaders.

Escobar proposed dual citizenship as a solution for the Serbs in Kosovo, while insisting that both sides commit to avoiding confrontations.

The development comes after the Kosovo Government decision on June 26 on restricting Serbian license plates and documents, increased tensions in the mainly Serbian north of Kosova.

On July 31 and August 1, local Serbs set up road barricades in protest of these decisions, while Pristina then postponed their implementation until September 1.
