Electoral processes blocked

The Central Election Commission has entered an institutional stalemate.

In the last days of 2012, when important decisions should have been taken for the next elections, the biggest electoral institution has not finished any of them.

The tenders for the technology that will be used in the elections and the distribution of mandates have been blocked at the CEC.

This is the reason why the opposition members asked an informative meeting, which was rejected. The opposition declared that this is an unprecedented case.

“We asked the next meeting of the CEC, although informally we had urged the colleagues to influence the Chairwoman for the elections. Article 22 of the Electoral Code says that this meeting can be summoned by the Chairwoman or two members, and there’s no need to vote this. This is an unprecedented case at the CEC”, declared Denar Biba, vice Chairman of the CEC.

CEC declared that the regulation doesn’t oblige a meeting when it is asked by two members.

“I challenge any member to quote an article that says that our request is illegal”, Biba declared.

He added that the regulation to which CEC is referring was repealed with the new Electoral Code.

The opposition declared that the unjustified delays for the tenders about technology and the verification of the population movement are a bad sign for the next elections.

“We will make everything possible so that the vote of the Albanians will remain free and untouched”, Biba declared.
