The morgue of Elbasan Hospital in central Albania seems to have become a business center, as employees bargain with relatives of victims for services or procedures that are not within their competence.
A citizen from Elbasan called the editorial office of the show ‘Fiks Fare’ on Top Channel, complaining that for the withdrawal from the morgue of this hospital the body of a relative, they had asked for a bribe of 50 thousand ALL.
Journalists asked to meet the staff of this morgue, and claiming that the relatives of the deceased were abroad demanded the retrieval of the body.
The morgue employee asked reporters how many days they wanted to leave the deceased in the morgue refrigerator. According to the employee, for each night he would keep the deceased in the morgue, they had to pay 30 thousand ALL ($250).
But the employee has gone even further by offering to perform all the procedures that a funeral agency could perform. From the washing of the deceased body to the clothes and underwear, which would cost the relatives another 20 thousand lek.
He even tells them that with a good price he can provide the coffin and the whole package in total would cost 90 thousand lek. All of this took place within a state institution, where the civilian morgue service is the facility where corpses are treated before the burial ceremony.
