EBRD President, Suma Chakrabarti, who is attending a two-day visit in
Tirana, underlined that Albania handled the financial crisis, but it
need to improve the business climate to obtain stability, and develop
economic growth policies. The priority of the EBRD strategy for Albania
will be the private sector support.

“The strategy for Albania, approved on December, foresees a three-year period and is focused on the development of private sector participation, the security of an efficient sector, an efficient electric energy, which is important not only for Albania but also for the region, the biggest participation of private investments for the agricultural sector and financial mediation, because there is a lot of liquidity in Albania and it would be better to use it for economic development”, Chakrabarti declared.

Prime Minister Berisha thanked EBRD for the investments made in Albania, supporting dozens of projects. Asked by journalists for the increased debt, the Prime Minister declared that the debt is manageable.

“The debt has served to the development of this system, but it becomes a problem to the moment that there are difficulties in answering to the debt. I can say that the Albanian government has not had and doesn’t have difficulties in serving the debt, and it is its duty to predict and stop situations that could bring a difficult situation to serve it”, Berisha declared.

In 20 years, EBRD financed more than 700 million USD for Albania’s infrastructure and energy, and has also assisted big private corporate.
