Albanian authorities report that dozens of branches may be closed this academic year in cities such as Shkodër, Elbasan, Durrës, Korçë, Vlorë and Gjirokastër as students have registered in small numbers.

In the northern center of Shkodër, 895 students sat down this Monday in the auditoriums of the “Luigj Gurakuqi” university in Shkodër for the start the new academic year. A small figure that is also reflected in the registrations in the study programs, 10 of which have from 0 to 5 students. Rector Rajmonda Kçira says that the university is waiting for an instruction from the Ministry of Education on how to deal with these branches, some of which are considered a priority.

Compared to a year ago, even at the University of Elbasan “Aleksandër Xhuvani” in central Albania, there is a decrease in the number of students, while 15 study programs are at risk of closure.

The new academic year at “Aleksandër Moisiu” University of Durres has started with new branches and opportunities for young people who are increasingly looking for adaptation to new developments and the needs of the labor market. Meanwhile, 3 study programs remain at risk of being closed, although registrations continue.

University of Gjirokastra in the south opened this year with a number of 372 students registered for this academic year after the second round of registrations filling less than half of the 800 open quotas. Even this year, the most unpreferred branches continue to be those of teaching, due to the average grade threshold of above 7.5. Overall, the figures speak of a drastic drop in interest to study at the university, so compared to 10 years ago when “Eqrem Çabej” received 3850 students, this year their total number is only 1550.

The new academic year has also started at the Ismail Qemali University in Vlora in the southwestern coast, where despite the progress of the process in the professional aspect, the biggest and only problem is the significant decrease in the number of students in the auditoriums. The Faculty of Humanities has been one of the most vulnerable.
