The former Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, warned that the
opposition would not recognize the debts taken by the government in the
international market, if the new debt law is not withdrawn.
“The opposition will send letters throughout the world, starting from tomorrow, saying that we do not recognize any debt that is taken outside the Parliament. This is the solution. We will send it to all stock markets. We cannot let you continue with an adventure, and behave with the public finances as if they were your personal finances”, Berisha declared.
The new law removes the obligation for a parliament approval in taking loans from international operators.
“With this law we are doing the same thing that is done in EU countries, except of Bulgaria, which doesn’t have it for its own reasons”, declared the Minister of Finances, Shkelqim Cani.
“Do you know that the EU countries have a debt level set by Constitution. If you remove the parliamentary control over the debt, what will happen with its level?”, Berisha declared.
The Minister of Finances denied the accusations that the government is avoiding the parliament control over the debt. According to him, the government will not be able to take loans without the authorization of the Parliament, which decides for the limits of the debt.
