“Cosa Nostra” trial, precedent for Albanian court

The head of Penal Lawyers’ Association blamed the court for not finding a
solution to the “Dajti” case, comparing it with a similar case in Italy
during the 70s and the 80s.

That situation was unblocked by giving a chance to the defendants to choose a lawyer from the list appointed by the state. When they refused it, the trial continued without a lawyer.

The process started in Palermo, on February 1986, and the defendant was one of the Cosa Nostra leaders.

The 340 page long file built all the facts for the most important mafia trial, when 500 people were arrested, starting from assassins and to their “godfathers”. The giant process led by Alfonso Giordano and Pietro Grasso gave life to prison sentences and 2665 years to prison in total.

Many of the defendants refused the lawyers appointed by the court, blocking this way the trial. On the same time, many state appointed lawyers gave up since the mafia was still very strong in Palermo.

Being in this situation, the Palermo decided that when defendants would refuse to choose a lawyer, the trial would continue without any.

And this unblocked the situation, also thanks to mafia members who collaborated with the justice.

Irritated and without lawyers, the mafia members yelled to the witnesses from the cage, but the court had given them the right to chose a lawyer and now they could continue the trial quietly.
