Constitutional Court rejects opposition’s request and leaves new territorial division in act

The Constitutional Court left in power the verdict for dividing the
country in 61 municipalities, The members of the Supreme Court rejected
the request of the Democratic Party, who claimed that this decision was
anti-constitutional.

The Democratic Party argued that the reform had violated at least five constitutional principles. They listed: an unilateral passing of the law, an accelerated parliamentary procedure, lack of consults with citizens, removing communes as local government units and dividing the areas by not respecting all criteria.

But it seems that these claims were not against the Constitution, which left the territorial division in act. Their arguments will be given with the court verdict.

The verdict has been greeted by Prime Minister Edi Rama, who considers it a clear decision.

“The decision of the Constitutional Court completes a historic reform and makes way for the radical reorganization of our territory and services”.

The local elections of the next year will be based on this territorial division. The date will be decreed by the President.
