The most important decision since its re-creation, the Albanian Constitutional Court chose to make public shortly before midnight on Thursday.

The judges said in their verdict that they did not find serious violations of the constitution enough to dismiss President Ilir Meta, rejecting thus the initiative of the Albanian Parliament a few months ago.

In the preliminary decision the Constitutional Court concluded that “The facts presented as violations of the Constitution do not constitute serious violations”.

The court also rejected the arguments for ‘damaging Albania’s relations with the international bodies’ with the decision supported by six members of the Constitutional Court as one voted against.

April will find Albanian politics and parliament stuck in debates over the election of a new president. The Socialist majority has not yet articulated the need for a consensual president, while for the Democratic Party now divided into two parts, the election of a new president is not currently on their political agenda.
