Chaos in Kakavija, Meta: Thousands of citizens were left abandoned, no one informed about the state in the Greek border crossings

In a press conference the President of the Republic, Ilir Meta spoke today about the serious situation in Kakavija, where for several days the border crossing points with Greece were occupied by a kilometers long queue of vehicles and about 10,000 people waiting to cross to the neighboring country.

“Thousands of citizens were left abandoned in difficult conditions at the borders. We need to get through the pandemic situation with as little cost as possible. The situation in Kakavija is about responsibilities not exercised in time by the government. It is the responsibility of the government to take care of its citizens.

“What information was given to them about traveling abroad? Has there been an official announcement from the foreign ministry about the number of citizens allowed? A responsible government prevents such situations that endanger the health of thousands of citizens. No one informed the citizens about the criteria needed to enter Greece.

“I apologize on behalf of the Albanian state to all citizens who for days went through very difficult moments at the border crossing points with Greece. The government blamed the citizens themselves for creating long queues. Ministers and key structures should follow with priority the movement of our citizens, update information on movement abroad and provide free coronavirus tests for migrants, as a 120 euro test is unaffordable, they must subsidize buffers and take measures so that the situation is not repeated at any border crossing point”, stated Meta in his declaration.
