CEC, Brussels opposes Berisha’s decision

Peter Stano underlined the fact that according to the Albanian Electoral Code, the election administration institutions can be replaced only in a professional and unbiased manner. They should function without obstacles and in a transparent and non partisan way.

“We are following the CEC situation very closely. The European Commission wants to underline that according to the Albanian Electoral Code, the electoral administration should be kept far from actions that damage its independence. This Commission should operate calmly and with transparency, not in a partisan way. The CEC independence should be guaranteed, since the elected members have sworn to be impartial and independent. All the political parties have the obligation to guarantee the credibility of the CEC, guaranteeing this way the credibility of this mission to the public. The agreement reached at the Electoral Code last year was a clear signal and proof of clear consensus between the government and opposition, in order to lead the country to the European path. We appeal all Albanian politicians to repeat this consensus, since this is for the sake of the country and the citizens”, Stano declared.

The spokesperson underlined the importance of the June 23rd elections not only for Albania, but also for the devaluation that the EU member countries will give.

“The elections and the electoral campaign will need to show another sign of maturity for the functionality of democracy in Albania. This will be evaluated by the member countries, when they will take a decision or Albania during the negotiations for enlargement”, Stano declared.

Peter Stano was more active with meetings to gather information by the party representatives, especially from the SMI.
