The Maritime Police Unit, consisting of 104 employees, starts the operations today to ensure the safety of vacationers on the Albanian coast.

The unit will also serve to monitor all tourist and entertainment vessels that use the Albanian water space during the summer tourist season.

Prime Minister Edi Rama was today at the presentation of the new Unit on Lungomare boulevard in Vlora in the southwest of Albania, along with the Minister of Internal Affairs, Blendi Çuçi, the Director General of the State Police, Muhamet Rrumbullaku, and other officials.

Rama stated: ‘This is a mission for the Albanian people, for the Albanian nation, and anyone who violates the sense of this mission, who behaves unworthily with those who come to our house in vacation will receive the maximum punishment’.

Rama also drew attention to the tragedy of a year ago in the Potam beach in HImara, where ex-policeman Arjan Tase crashed to death 7-year-old Jonada Avdia with his speedboat.

“The criminal act of that individual shamed the entire State Police, and it should serve as a wake-up call to all Police officers, to not do things that shame not just your families, but shame the entire community and theblue uniforms”, he stated.

The 104 employees of the new police unit are selected by the Border & Migration Police and the Order Police, trained and certified by Albanian Coast Guard specialists, in cooperation with the Border & Migration Department.
