The Democratic Party leader, Lulzim Basha, started the press conference
by accusing Rama and Meta of undoing the Democratic standard of the
elections.
“They are getting older but they are doing the same old manipulations throughout the country”, Basha declared. For 20 minutes, Basha mentioned the cases when the opposition claims police has supported criminals, when votes were bought and when the administration was used for the elections.
“For Rama and Meta these elections are not for the citizens, but for the to take the coastline, the highways and the territories of the Albanian people”, Basha declared.
The opposition leader made a direct accusation to Prime Minister Edi Rama.
“The Democratic Party has evidence of threats made on the phone by Edi Rama to the candidates of these elections. He tells them to withdraw or they will suffer, same as the enemies of the people on the old Albanian movies. This is a quotation from Edi Rama and I say this with full responsibility”, Basha declared.
Basha didn’t mention the name of the candidate that was threatened, but later, the Democratic Party confirmed it was about the independent candidate of Vlore, Vasil Bedinaj.
“Today, Rama and Meta are not certain for victory in any municipality because they are a minority that is getting smaller in front of a majority that is getting bigger. This minority will never be able to submit this majority and this democracy in a free Albania”, Basha declared.
The opposition leader said he was encouraged by the declaration of the Helsinki Committee of the US Congress and the Deputy President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the OSCE, who, according to Basha, said that the Albanian citizens should be able to trust that they are being part of a transparent electoral process, free of threats, attacks against candidates, media, officials and voters, but, as their declaration says, these are still a concern in Albania.
“We are the majority and we will show it on June 21st. The people is the majority. Oligarchy is the minority. They will never be a majority, unless we let them be. Vote massively. The process will be calm and civilized. The process will be democratic. This is guaranteed by the Democratic Party and the international partners. The oligarchy cannot touch your vote. Vote massively”, the DP leader declared.
But is there anything that may force the DP to abandon the elections? Basha’s answer did not have definite “no”.
“There is nothing that will make us abandon the battleground. The dynamics of the battle is not only up to us. We hope there will be a confrontation between adversaries where the sovereign decides with votes. If one of the opponents wants to leave this battle all destroy the equal rules, they will take what they deserve”, Basha added.
Basha said that the international partners will not allow Rama and Meta to create a regime like that of Putin.
“We have the support of the US congress, not Putin and his standards. That’s why they were like that today, with more tension and a lower pulse, because they have taken the first warning. This path has only one finish for those who violate democracy. If they try, they will not be able to be recycled as they did in 2001 and 2003. This will be their end”, Basha declared.
