Albania’s acting Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Gent Cakaj, is attending a visit to Austria, part of a lobbying tour in all European capitals before their decision for Albania’s EU accession negotiations.

“I am happy to welcome my colleague here in Vienna. Our bilateral relations are perfect. Austria is a strong supporter of the EU. We appreciate Albania’s efforts with the reforms, especially with the judiciary. We are aware of the blocking political situation. The Albanian authorities have made good progress with the cooperation in customs, with the fight against corruption and the drug traffic. This is something to be taken in consideration and respected. As regards the talks for the EU accession negotiations, Vienna and our government are always ready to give support, because we think that the Southeastern part of Europe must be taken in consideration especially regarding matters related to immigration and security, which would help making the EU safer”, the Austrian Foreign Minister said.

Gent Cakaj declared: “I want to thank the Minister for the constructive cooperation. This visit helped increase cooperation in other areas as well. Our meeting focused on the bilateral cooperation in economy, trade and new investments. We also focused on Austria’s support for Albania’s European agenda, and the opening of the accession negotiations on June 2019, based on the progress that Albania has achieved with the five priorities. Another topic we discussed was Albania’s turn for leading the OSCE in 2020. We received Austria’s support for this process, in a diplomatic and technical level, for increasing our capacities”.
