Beçishti, one of the largest villages on the right bank of the Vjosa River, opposite Tepelena in southern Albania, has shrunk and is continually abandoned due to lack of roads, schools and services.

In the village of ancient ruler Ali Pasha that once overlooked Tepelena, every day about 15 children up to the 9th grade, travel to Tepelena via an unpaved road, for the usual means.

The school and road are in some way interconnected as their degradation made living for young people in the area impossible.

They left along with the children, causing the school to close 5 years ago.

Today Beçisht is still making use of the gift that Ali Pasha gave to his fellow villagers more than two centuries ago, the rope bridge over the Vjosa River.

The walk both degraded and dangerous, remains ironically the fastest solution to connect with the village inhabitants with the 6 other villages of the area.
