Albanians and Hungarians have a special relation which starts with the friendship between each country’s national heroes Skanderbeg and Janosh Huniad.

On the 100th anniversary of Tirana’s declaration as capital of Albania, Mayor Erion Veliaj received a delegation led by the Vice Mayor of Budapest, Erzsébet Gy Németh, to discuss how to further improve the relations between the two countries and inaugurate the new fountain in front of the Albanian National Library.

This donation aims at preserving and protecting the cultural heritage and also the environment but appreciating urban renewable sources, which are a priority for Tirana as well.

“Our cities have a special relationship and I look forward to expanding it even further. We start it today with a contribution to our city, setting up a fountain dedicated to the special relationship that our two national heroes had, Skanderbeg and Janosh HUniad.

“This will continue in April 21st, when we will inaugurate the statue of Skanderbeg in Budapest, in one of the city’s most beautiful parks”, Veliaj said.

The Mayor of Tirana said that by establishing direct transport lines with Budapest will increase the number of tourists between both countries.

“We found the best solution to leave two marks in our cities with our 100th anniversary. I know that this is only the beginning. After 500 years of friendship, it is good news that our cities are tied even closer.

“This relationship started 10 years ago, and today we have the ideal chance to take it even further. It is great news that the Hungarian airlines have turned Tirana into a mini-center, with at least nine destinations”, Veliaj declared.

The Vice Mayor of Budapest, Erzsébet Gy Német, thanked Mayor Veliaj for the warm welcome and invited him to an official visit in Budapest.

“I am very happy to be here. We welcome you in Budapest on April 21st to inaugurate the statue of Skanderbeg in Budapest”, she declared.

During this 4 years of cooperation, Tirana’s Aqueduct and the company that manages the water system in Budapest have worked together to create a new vision around the technical development of UKT, by conducting a study called “The Mid-term Development and Strategic Master Plan of UKT.
