Ettore Sequi and Alexander Arvizu – The Albanian people can really be
proud of the last elections, which showed not only to the Albanian
people, but also to their friends in Europe and the United States, that
these elections were administered in the most successful way that
Albania has had so far. The elections showed that the Albanians are
actively engaged in the democratic process, and they showed more
democratic maturity. But the elections are not a purpose on their own.
The Albanians, same as citizens in other democracies, elect their
leaders to serve the people’s interest and to work on behalf of every
citizen. The Albanian citizens had a massive participation in these
elections, and they did it for reforms and change. The voters now
expect the government and all parliamentary parties to work for these
reforms and realize Albania’s European Union integration quickly.
The results reached from Albania so far need to be consolidated through constant reforms and their implementation. More importantly, the constructive dialogue and cooperation should be a rooted feature of Albania’s political landscape. This would allow the reforms to continue in areas that are a priority, and would keep Albania on the path towards the European Union. Albania has achieved a lot since 1992 and has reasons to be proud of it. However, there is still much to do in the weeks, months and years to come.
Albania can become part of the European Union. This will require dedication to approve and implement key reforms, especially for the rule of law. I will ask for Albania to show its ability and good will to implement the anti-corruption laws, and increase transparency, accountability and effectiveness of the judiciary, including the penal code. We will also demand concentration and determination to treat complicated human right issues, including the property reforms.
Albania can become more prosperous and improve the living standard of its citizens. We encourage the new government to implement and reinforce the practices that create a honest and transparent environment for business and equal rules for all investors. Domestic and foreign investments could be a significant boost of the economic development in the years to come, but before this happens, investors need a stable and predictable environment, so that they can create jobs and more chances for the Albanian citizens.
Albania can have a public administration that is capable, stable and professional, and that gives qualitative services to the citizens.
Albania can keep playing a moderated and constructive role in the region. Albania can help guarantee the Albanians throughout the region to play full, active and constructive roles as the citizens of the neighboring countries. The recent agreement between Kosovo and Serbia opens a new era of opportunities for regional cooperation. Reforms would make Albania a strong ally in NATo and a contributor of European security. Albania could serve as an example for other Balkan countries that aspire accession.
We are convinced that Albania can progress and realize the aspirations of all its citizens.
Albania has a chance to progress and build a more stable future. The challenges might seem frightening, but we believe that Albania should take this opportunity and guarantee a better future for the country. The European Union and the United States are ready to support Albania in guaranteeing a future as a just society and with strong roots in the European Union and the Euro-Atlantic community, where the Albanian people belong.
