The leader of the Democratic Party, Lulzim Basha announced tonight he is suspending former Prime Minister Sali Berisha from the DP parliamentary group, “until the truth comes to light”, regarding the decision of the US State Department on the matter.

In a statement to the media, the leader of the opposition PD, while emphasizing the important role of Berisha in strengthening Albania-US relations, reiterated the call for transparency in this process.

Basha added that the PD partnership with the US is inviolable and will continue to remain so in the interest of the Democrats, and the future of Albania.

“Berisha is undoubtedly the Albanian leader who has given the most valuable contribution to the strengthening of democracy and took our friendship with the United States to higher levels.

“I want to reiterate that the decision of the State Department does not affect the achievements of Albania under Berisha’s leadership. We consider the US our most important strategic ally for Albania. In order to concretize this position, I have decided that until the end of the review of the legal request for transparency, Berisha will not be a member of the PD parliamentary group”, added Basha.
