January 1st marks the re-opening of online sports betting in Albania, of which the government says it will generate about 2 billion lek in the state coffers.

But how does this activity affect the family and the citizens’ budget?

“Gambling and alcohol only bring harm, not good. I personally have never played, have neither the inclination nor interest. But I know that betting only harms both economically and socially”, says the interviewee in Tirana.

“I have heard that many families have been destroyed, couples have divorced because of lotteries and betting. This makes me think that it brings more harm than good. The state budget can be fattened, but the damage to the family and society is irreparable”.

“It damages the family, it gives the new generation a bad habit. It is like a worm that enters your blood and makes you lose. Children, fathers will loose money in betting, the house will remain without food”, says another interviewee.

“Betting is not good and even those who gamble know this, but what can they do if they sink and can’t get out of that addiction,” says the citizen.

“These people are so greedy. Small betting shops have been there all the time, all without exception and without ever stopping. There is a lot of money in the country, so people think they will win, and they are lying. Being addicted to gambling destroys the whole family, because he takes the money from the house, asks for debt here and there to play. Don’t they know that they gambled to win for themselves, not for the players?” said the citizens.
