In the village of Vranisht in the municipality of Himara, at the foot of the Cika mountain, lives and works the well-known traditional stonemason Selman Pazo.
Its peculiarity is that although 85 years of age, he keeps himself alive by way of an unique profession, that of stone handicraft.
Since childhood games, Pazo has had a passion for stone carving, while he continued this for his whole life, patiently softening and shaping it.
He walks every day at the foot of Mount Cika to pick up pieces of rock, which he then turns into figurines andalso musical instruments. For the journalists visiting him, he plays a tune he called “The Singing Stone”.
Selmani says that the two elements of his “dyjare” instrument resemble the ‘twin towers’ and asks that this symbolic gift be sent to the American embassy in Albania.
His room resembles a museum of stone objects, a small artistic world of stonecraft, in which every souvenir hand made.
According to Sejmen Gjokoli, specialist of cultural heritage in Vlora and of the association “Art craft”, Selmani is a unique case of artisan that must be preserved.
