75-year-old teacher refuses retirement, goes to class with the children every day

Vera has chosen to still continue working at the age of 75 in the subject of mathematics, in the 9-year cycle in a private school.

“I never thought of retiring and I am worried about the progress of the school. Once we were closed by the earthquake, then by covid-19 … and I do not know how we will recover from this situation. In mathematics this is very sensitive. One thing that is taught in the fourth grade also applies to graduates”.

In 54 years of teaching she says that this was the most unusual, and therefore the most important to be close to the students.

“I live if I work. I am very happy to work with them. I cannot imagine my life without this kind of work. I also feel sorry for the children because they are small, they can hardly speak with a mask. Sometimes I can hardly hear anyone speak and in a low voice I have to repeat it. I try to speak out loud but the difficulties are there. The mask is an obstacle but we cannot do much about it. The distance is kept. I can no longer go face to face with a child as I did before but I check the tasks from a distance. A distance of affection is created, if you understand”, adds teacher Vera.
