The Covid-19 pandemic has also affected Albanian prisons. From its inception three were the hotspots; prison 313 in Tirana, that of Kruja and the penitentiary institution of Drenova in Korça.

In the latter, on Wednesday was marked the first victim from the coronavirus from the ranks of prisoners. The General Director of prisons, Agim Ismaili, told Top Channel that a75-year-old who lost his life was being treated for the disease .

“He did not lose his life in the Drenova prison, but in the state hospital where was being treated for this disease. He had been diagnosed with other concomitant diseases.”

Currently, a total of 67 prisoners have been confirmed positive since March, 47 of whom are already negative. However, the director of Prisons, Ismaili says the risk of other infections is present.

“Apparently, they are quarantined because they are isolated and have no contact with the outside world, but taking into account new comers, arrests, the meetings that they have, court hearings, however minimized, Covid-19 crosses these and enters”, he adds.
