14 including doctors, arrested for corruption; Mediated Covid-19 tests in exchange for payment

Police have handcuffed 14 people, including doctors and former doctors of the Institute of Hygiene, the Health Inspectorate and health clinics in Tirana.

After 4 months of investigations led by the Special Prosecution Against Corruption and Organized Crime, it was discovered that these suspects in exchange for impunity with fines of entities in violation of hygienic-sanitary conditions, received sums of money from 5000 to 10 thousand lek.

The detainees also provided with fictitious health cards and also mediated for Covid-19 test for, against payments from 5 thousand to 10 thousand new lek.

The 14 citizens under investigation also took bribes from various businesses in order not to be fined again, in cases when they were found to have violated the regulation.

The police managed to seize 1.5 million lek and 2500 euros which were found in the house of one of the arrested doctors. They also seized 35 health booklets found in several businesses in Tirana, as well as disinfection certificates and various medical documents issued fictitiously.
