The alphabet that Albania uses today was unified 110 years ago, in Manastir (today’s Bitola, Macedonia).

The Congress of Manastir was commemorated with activities in the Albanian city that today is in Macedonia.

The unification of the alphabet turned into one of the most important political problems of the time. Albanian scholars from Ioannina, Shkodra, Kosovo, Manastir and even from the USA and other European countries, gathered to discuss the unification of the alphabet.

Until 1908, Albanians are were using several different alphabets. The approval of the Istanbul Alphabet in 1879 didn’t resolve the problem, as it was only used in Southern and Middle Albania.

In Manastir, Albanians left aside their divisions on behalf of the Albanian nation, which was being divided after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.
