Durres not ready yet for tourist season

Albania is on the verge of opening the tourist season. However, it seems
that the country has not prepared yet. Security measures in beaches are
absent. The former watch towers in Durres have disappeared, while in
Shkembi i Kavajaes and Golem there are just a few remaining.

“Every private beach must have watch towards and lifeguards. We are seeing the possibility to offer more public beaches for the people, and we are working to clean and adjust them”, said the Durres Mayor, Vangjush Doko.

Last year only a few private subjects answered to this project, but this year they will be unable to have licenses without fulfilling the security conditions.

“This is the first year that we undertake this initiative, and I believe it will be implemented”, Dakos said.

Tourist operators are not happy with the lack of security measures. They say that the controlling role of the state is decisive to create discipline and make the conditions be implemented by all subjects.

“There is a problem between the National Coastal Agency and the local governments, both of which are not doing their duty. Beaches must be prepared on time, not when the season is already started. There are just a few watchtowers. Private beaches should be allowed based on criteria which should be implemented the same for everyone”, said Sokol Hoxha, tourist operator and chairman of the Albanian Tourism Association.
