Dritan Zeneli is one of the residents of Berxulli in the outskirts of the Albanian capital Tirana, whose lands are affected by the Thumanë-Kashar road project.
He is a former migrant, who returned to his village to engage in agriculture and livestock farming, who rented land in which he says he invested nearly 100,000 euros, but today he is at a crossroads.
Dritan says that he is not against the project or development, but he wants to be compensated with the market price, since a meter of land has been assessed by the authorities for as much as a liter of cooking oil costs today.
“Come on, tell me where you’re going to take me with the land. But not with 4,000 lek per meter, which is how much a liter of cooking oil costs today”, says Zeneli.
There are 70 families that are affected by this project, which no one has explained to them about this project except for the threatening phone calls they received to force them to put their signatures down.
But they say they won’t allow the road to be built without being compensated at the market price. “We will protect the land. We will go and burn ourselves in front of the Prime Minister’s offfice”, says the resident.
The residents of Berxulli have been protesting for several days. The day before, they tried to block the road to the airport, as they warn of the escalation of protests.
