WB Director visiting Tirana for inspection

The World Bank Director for
Albania and Regional Coordinator for Southeastern Europe, Jane Armitage,
is visiting Albania for the second time in a short period.

The first time was in June, with the Bank Board member, when she visited some projects, among them the Vlore Thermocentral, for which the WB has offered a loan of 100 million USD.

WB Official sources announce that the purpose of this visit is to directly update Armitage with the projects, an inspection that was planned a long time ago.

The visit of the World Bank Director will continue in Albania until September 14th, long enough for seeing their progress.

“The main goal of this visit will be the progress assessment for the WB program in Albania and to participate in the conference “For a better governing”, which will be held on September 13rd”, says her press office.

During her visit, Jane Armitage will hold meetings with the Prime Minister Sali Berisha, cabinet members, the opposition leader Edi Rama and representatives of the EU Presence in Albania.

She will also visit some projects financed by the World Bank. After the meetings, the WB Director will hold a press conference, which the media is looking forward for knowing the latest developments in some sectors where the World Bank is present.

There is a great interest for the problem that the Bank had with the hospital investments with a value of 3.6 million USD, for which the bank expressed its reserves on the way it was managed by the Health Ministry, which had declared winner a private company in an irregular way.

Another important matter will be the pension system and the new scheme that is being discussed. The World Bank has played an important role in the policy planning and has supported the government with funds for creating the capacities that help the planning of a right project for pensions.

The World Bank was the mediator institution between the Democratic Party and the opposition for the pension reform, which was initiated in 2008 but had no progress due to the political crisis.

Since 1991, the Bank has invested more than 1 billion USD in loans without interests all over the country.

Even with the undergoing investments, reaching 265 million USD, the World Bank is present in more than 43 municipalities and 230 communes.
