The MPs of the Albanian Parliament are debating about the law for
integrated management of waste materials, which was returned by the
President for a review.

The Socialist MP, Sajmir Tahiri, asked a referendum to understand if the Albanian people agree with turning the country into a rubbish bin of the region and all Europe.

“Don’t make policy with this law. Organize a referendum for hearing the voice of the Albanians”, Tahiri declared.

He says that it is unacceptable to import toxic waste materials that bring cause severe diseases such as leukemia and different types of cancers, only because the Prime Minister and their people want to make money from this business.

The Socialist Parliament Group Leader,  Gramoz Ruci, declared that the draft law can be discussed if they remove clause 22 for the import of waste materials in our country.

“We will not allow the import of waste materials. Clause 22 of this law must be removed, and only after we can sit and discuss. Even if you approve this law, we will not give up from our demand to not allow the import of waste materials”, Ruci declared.

Ruci underlined that this is a wide debate not only on the Parliament floor, but also outside the Parliament Building.

“Let us stop the discussion and organize a referendum. We don’t understand why this law needs to be approved with such an urgency”, Ruci underlined.

Berisha: Won’t import dangerous substances

The Albanian PM declared that the waste materials must be imported, because they are not dangerous and are part of the Green List.

“We must import, because we have signed an agreement that imposes Albania to enable free circulation of non-toxic waste materials”, Berisha declared.

According to the PM, Albania will import only 50 of the 400 listed materials, and each of them will enter according to the rules of the Council of Ministers.
