Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future When passing the Agreement for giving the legal status to the Regional
Center of Central and Eastern Europe for the Environment, the opposition
and government MPs explained their position regarding the waste
recycling industry and the waste import.
The government passed the import of polyethylene wastes, which are mostly used for producing plastic bags and aluminum wastes.
The opposition MP had suspicions about the government decision, but the Environment Minister, Fatmir Mediu, explained the decision-making process.
“This is a process that has passed all inspection phases, with the participation of the civil society, the Ecomovement, the Group of Mr. Guri, Mr. Hanxhari, etc. and representatives from the commune who have proved the capacity that they have for treating these wastes. But let’s not speak a priori. If we speak a priori, and if we want to close the recycling industry, there will be no integrated waste management”, Mediu declared.
But the Socialist MP, Besnik Bare, declared that the opposition was not against the waste import, although they made a strong debate and voted against the integrated waste management.
Based on the government decision that imposes taxes of 100 ALL per kg for imported goods and 50 ALL per kg for imported waste materials, Bare declared that the opposition supports more stimulating policies than this for the recycling of the domestic waste materials. According to him, this would clean the country and there would be less import.
“This is and has always been a concern for the Socialist Party. Let us clean our country first, and encourage economic mechanisms for cleaning our country. And if these plants of extra capacity and our own materials are not sufficient, then we can import materials that are not dangerous”, Baraj declared.
But Minister Mediu raised the problem that the wastes in Albania are not divided for the recycling process.
According to the official data, these recycling industries can collect only 40% of the current plastic materials that circulate in the country.
