The signatures of 61.000 citizens who demand a referendum for not
allowing the waste import in Albania have been submitted at the Central
Election Commission,

The representatives of the Alliance Opposing Waste Import requested for the state structures to give an answer for this matter by autumn.

“We collected the signatures in winter and we hope that CEC will allow the Albanian citizens to vote in the referendum this autumn. We all know taht the referendum law has many defects, but the spirit is such that the Constitution allows a referendum initiated by the citizens, which has never happened in Albania for the last 21 years”, declared the environmentalist Lavdosh Farruni.

In a symbolical way, some of the representatives of this alliance showed that Albania should be healthy for the young generation.

“This is a process that aims to preserve a healthy environment; a healty Albania, not only for today, but also for the next generations. In a symbolical way, this child represents an Albania without wastes”, declared activist Andi Tepelena.

The Deputy Minister of Environment underlined that he is not against the referendum, but not for this case, because it has a political approach.

“I am against a referendum with political background that doesn’t resolve the waste management problem in Albania. We have heard the appeals of the Socialist Party, and we have heard the Socialist MPs signing this law in 2002-2003, for importing wastes. Now they are against it. Most important than the political background, is finding a solution for the waste management and the referendum does not fix this”, declared the Deputy Minister Taulant Bino.

Representatives of the Alliance underlined that this is the second time when the civil society undertakes an initiative for holding a referendum.
