The war in Ukraine seems to be spreading panic among Albanian consumers as wholesale outlets have faced an influx of citizens seeking to buy sacks of flour.

“People want a lot of flour and there is panic. I have not seen such great demand, not even at the time of the pandemic. There is plenty of flour, but people definitely want to have flour at home, some over require 20 sacks”, says the interviewed seller.

The latest grain ship from Russia has reportedly arrived at the Port of Durrës. The request for 3030 tons of wheat was made by flour producers 13 days ago, a time at which the Ukraine-Russia war had not yet begun.

Trade relations with Russia and Ukraine have been severed due to the war in development. According to data from INSAT, last year 46% of grain imported to Albania had Russia as country of origin.

The closure of trade corridors between Russia and our country has spread panic among the citizens.

But the head of the Flour Producers Association, Adi Haxhiymeri, says that bread has been secured for Albanians, and that there is no room for panic: “Of course we have our reserves. An average measurement of the whole amount we have, we say we provide flour for a month and a half or something more. ”

Flour importers are looking to buy bulk wheat in European markets, as according to them there is wheat but it will cost more.
