Besnik Zykaj, also known as Bino Binaj, was arrested by the Italian
Police under request of the Albanian justice, which has sentenced him to
life in prison in absence, for crimes against humanity.
The internationally wanted 49-year-old had been fleeing since 2008, charged for murder. He was arrested at the Italian Emigration Office, where he tried to extend his residence permit.
In 1990, when he was commander of a border patrol, Zykaj opened fire against two brothers that were trying to illegally cross the border, by killing one of them and wounding the second.
Then he fled the country with falsified documents and lived for many years in Italy. Although he had been in the Interpol wanted list for the last four years, Zykaj was leading a calm life in Italy, and he was surprised by the arrest, according to the Italian media.
The 49-year-old who is expecting extradition has the right to appeal a request to the Italian Justice for repealing his extradition order to Albania, where he will be kept in prison for life.
