All Albanian Public Universities today are voting for their leaders, the rectors, the deans and the department chiefs.
The professors, students and the administration went today to the polls of 11 universities, 60 faculties and 250 departments.
Every university has its own regulation and its Central Election Commission. Almost all Deans aim a second mandate, a right that was granted to them by the recent law amends.
The mandates are four years long, and rectors and deans cannot stay for more than two mandates. Different to the political elections, the universities calculate the votes through percentage. The votes of the entire academic staff make 75% of the process, 20% comes from the students and 5% from the public administration.
The electoral process closes today at 16:00, after which will start the ballot count. Unofficial information suggests that the final result will be published tomorrow.
University elections, Kule vs Hafizi
The strongest race in these elections is that of the Tirana University Rector. The candidates are the Prof. As. Mimoza Hafizi and Prof. Dr. Dhori Kule, who is running for a second mandate.
Hafizi graduated in 1985, for Physics, with a golden medal. She received her master degree in 1991 (DEA) for Physics Theory, and her PhD in 1995m for Management of Physics Theory, in University Paris VII, France.
Hafizi’s platform has three main points: more qualitative diplomas, autonomy to the basic level and transparent fund management.
She will race against Prof. Dr. Dhori Kule, who has led the Tirana University for the last four years. Kule was graduated in the Economic faculty, which he led for 10 years. In 2008 he was elected Rector of the Tirana University, in which he was one of the strongest public university supporters.
