Vlora Airport project voted by majority members only

The government members at the Commission of Productive Activities voted to approve the draft law which authorizes the government to negotiate a PPP agreement for building a new international airport in Vlora.

The Minister of Infrastructure, Damian Gjiknuri, declared that the Turkish consortium bid is serious, with a 100 million EUR investment.

The Minister said they could not disclose any further details about the bid since that would damage the negotiations.

The members of the opposition votes against, claiming there is a lack of transparency since the Parliament is asked to only authorize the negotiation of the agreement.

“We are interested in having a serious government, rather than serious quality for the airport. We have only seen the Prime Minister visiting Turkey and then stating that he had asked his friend to help build the airport”, said Florian Mima from the opposition.

Gjiknuri admitted that the investment has fiscal risks, but they are minimal, as with any other project.

Top Channel has learned that the government will guarantee a specific profit level for the private builders, based on a formula similar to that of the Durres-Kukes maintenance. If the company fails to earn this specific profit on its own, it will be covered by the government budget.
