Vjose river is being destroyed

25/04/2012 00:00

80% of the Vjosa riverbed has been polluted by the sewage waters and urban wastes.

192 kilometers of this river go across the Albanian territory and the pollution is increased as soon that it enters Albania. The first 80 kilometers of this River in Greece have wonderful natural parks.

The pollution has changed the ecosystem with very grave consequences, such as the extinction of the river plane tree.

“We are taking measures by creating fixed points for the waste materials, so that they cannot damage the water”, declared Lavdi Hasani, biologist.

Along the entire valley and until the delta, more than 40 communes and municipalities are the contributors of this pollution. The regional environmental agencies have fined some communes, but it hasn’t changed the water quality.

Besides the pollution, Vjose valley is also damaged by massive deforestation and poaching.
