The Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats at the European
Parliament reacted after the protested held by the opposition yesterday
and condemned the violence that was shown.
According to S&D, the democratic principles and values in Albania must be fully respected.
Knut Fleckenstein, rapporteur for Albania, said: “After the violent protests of yesterday, which – regrettably – were openly supported by the leader of the opposition, I am obliged to stress the need for caution and call for a more responsible attitude.”
Fleckenstein spoke on decriminalization too, a law on which the opposition and government seem to have reached an agreement: “According to the latest information I received, the decriminalisation law was about to be adopted; it is therefore hard to understand what has triggered the protests. And even in cases where protest is legitimate, the organisers should make every effort to avoid violence. We strongly condemn violence and call for normal political behaviour, in line with European standards and in the interests of the nation as a whole.”, he said.
