Only in the Albanian capital, one woman a day, in average, files for protection from husbands.
The Tirana Court reports that from January to the end of February, 82 suits have been filed by women who have suffered violence. The police declare that 1355 women have reported for violence throughout the country during 2011, and have requested protection from courts.
Only in the last two months of 2012, the numbers of women reporting physical and psychological violence and that have requested protection goes to 400.
Eglantina, from Berat, is mother of two boys and one of the many women violated by their husbands. While being in a divorce process, she has requested protection from her husband’s violent attacks.
“Once he tried to throw me from the balcony. Another time he beat me in the middle of the town, when we were taking the children out. I asked protection when I couldn’t stand it anymore”, Eglantina declared, now residing in a state shelter.
Due to the frequent violence, the court ordered the father of the two children to stay 500 meters away from the house.
“The court has not allowed him to approach for more than 500 meters from the residence or the work place, but he doesn’t respect it. He has violated it and I have filed a new suit. He called and threatened on the phone that he will kill me”, Eglantina declared.
Referring to the statistics, police declares that most of the women who report violence come from Tirana, Korca, Durres, Fier, Vlore and Shkoder. Police says that the cases when rural women report violence are very few.
