Villages punished with poverty. Yale professor: “Politics focused in cities”

Poverty remains in high number in Albania. Despite the slight
improvement in the past years, there has been another growth in 2012.

The concentration of poverty in rural areas is product of politics and of its electoral hunger, according to Thomas Pogge from the Yale university. He says that this policy leave villages outside of their attention.

“It is easy to organize a protest with 100.000 unhappy citizens in Tirana, that’s why you have to make them happy. In rural areas it is more difficult for people to create political groups that force the government in their favor. That’s why governments ignore rural areas. But if we want stable development, we need to be proactive and protect these people, make sure that their children have food and education. The government must turn villages into a priority and this is not difficult in Albania, because there are beautiful places here with very good tourist attractions”, said Thomas Pogge, Yale University professor.

The Minister of Economy, Milva Ekonomi, said that tourism is the sector that might remove poverty from rural areas.
