The United States Assistant Deputy Secretary of State, Philip Reeker,
declared that the United States remain committed to support the
aspiration of Balkan countries towards the European Union and NATO.
During a video conference from New York, Reeker spoke about the June elections in Albania, the Pristina-Belgrade agreement and the local elections in Kosovo. Philip Reeker greeted the successful elections management in Albania and the reaction of the political leaders.
“I want to underline that the June elections are a great achievement for the Democratic Evolution of Albania, and an important evidence while Albania goes closer to the European Union candidate status. My European colleagues had made it clear that they would follow these elections closely. I think that Albania now joined some other countries of the region that held successful elections in the past years. I also want to emphasize that the difficult job for building democracy does not end with a ballot count and declaring a winner. We are happy that the efforts for the creation of the new government are continuing normally. The United States will continue to support and encourage the new government to act based on the powerful mandate that they received from the voters and concentrate on the European Union candidate status”, Reeker declared.
The European Union membership status was blocked in Albania due to strong political rhetoric. The new government, according to Reeker, should focus on important and necessary reforms for achieving this objective, and for reinforcing the rule of law, the improvement of transparency and accountability.
He reiterated the position held by the United States upon the need to focus on the fight against corruption and organized crime, not only for the Albanian government, but for every other state. The United States official declared that Balkan is detaching from the past and he mentioned the great commitment shown by Kosovo and Serbia.
The governments of both countries came up with the conclusion that the status quo was not helping them and their people to progress, by implementing the agreement of April 19th in Brussels for the normalization of the relations between the two countries.
“Now we are seeing benefits regarding the European Union integration”, he added.
Philip Reeker declared that the local elections of November 3rd in Kosovo are very important, a real chance for the Kosovo citizens to elect the representatives of their institutions, who will improve their lives.
“The United States believe that the Euro-Atlantic integration in Balkan are an important element for achieving a united and free Europe, in peace and progress. This objective remains the basics of the United States foreign policy in Europe”, Reeker underlined.
