USA: “Government must take draft to parliament. Voting, individual responsibility of MPs”

The USA expressed their disappointment for the failed meeting of this
Monday between Prime Minister Edi Rama and the opposition leader, Lulzim
Basha, for the justice reform.

The US Embassy in Tirana blamed the opposition for this failure, supporting the government to send the draft for voting it in Parliament.

“The US Embassy expresses its disappointment that the meeting of June 6th between PM Edi Rama and the opposition leader, Lulzim Basha, could not reach a final decision on the justice reform. The government showed flexibility, but the opposition did not do the same thing. This is why the USA support the effort of the Albanian government to take the draft for passing in Parliament. It will be an individual responsibility of the Parliament Members to decide if they want to keep the current corrupted and politicized justice system, or if they want to support the reform”, the US Embassy declared.

The US reaction says that the exhausted process of negotiations has improved the reform draft, although it is left to be understood that there will be further changes, in order to approach the stances between parties.

“This reform that has the support of most of the Albanian people remains a key priority for the USA. The USA will work hard to make sure that the final draft presented at the special commission for the justice reform and in parliament will have a righteous one that represents the best ideas of the local, international and Venice Commission experts”, the announcement says.

The EU delegation in Tirana expressed the same line. They said it was regrettable that the political leaders were unable to find a solution.

“We support the democratic process to secure approval of the current legislative proposition, which is completely based on the European standards and EU commitments of the EU”, says the reaction of the EU mission.

Same as their US counterparts, the delegation notes that all Parliament Members hold special responsibility to most of the Albanian citizens who want an independent, professional and impartial judiciary.

“We encourage Albania to take the necessary steps to approve the legal package for the justice reform”, the official declaration concludes.
