A federal court in Brooklyn, New York, accused 37 members and
cooperators of an international drug network that according to the US
Justice Department was managed by Albanian criminals who lived in USA,
Canada and Europe.
They are accused of trafficking cocaine and marijuana. After searching 7 residencies that belong to the members of this organization, they were able to seize 18 firearms and hundreds of bullets.
According to US authorities, most of the suspects were arrested in New York, New Jersey, Colorado and Florida. Two of them were arrested last month. Some of them are in jail for previous crimes. One of the managers of this network was arrested in Albania, and according to Wall Street Journal, he led the traffic scheme from the prison, through smuggled smart phones.
The United States have asked his extradition. The arrested persons appeared to Court for communicating the accusations. According to the US prosecution, the network includes several Albanian families, connected with hundreds of workers and clients in three continents. This network that had been performing for more than one decade might be responsible for importing and distributing thousands of kilos of marijuana from Canada and Mexico, considerable quantities of MDMA from Netherlands and Canada, hundreds of kilos from Mexico, Columbia, Venezuela and Peru, and also large quantities of pills, such as oxycodone.
The drug was distributed in different parts of the United States, including New York, California, Georgia, Colorado, Florida, Canada and Europe. According to other materials presented by the US state, the four year old investigation discovered that most of the marijuana was smuggled in from Canada and Mexico, hidden in tractors, usually 55 kg per load, sometimes even 600. If they will be found guilty, the three suspected leaders of this network, Xhavit Thaçi, Arif Kurti and Gjevelin Berisha will face at least 25 years in prison or life imprisonment.
