Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The Socialist Party Secretary for Electoral Issues, Damian Gjiknuri, was
invited at the World Leaders’ Forum held for the Democratic Party
Convention in Northern Carolina.
The invitation was made by the Board of Governors of the National Democratic Institute headed by former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. This event had the presence of famous political and diplomatic personalities.
During his stay in the U.S. MP Gjiknuri met at the US State Department with Jonathan Moor, Director of the District of Eastern and Southeastern Europe. Mr. Moore is deputy to Mr. Philip Reeker, who is on a visit in Tirana.
During this meeting they talked about the issues related to the independent institutions, their reinforcement, the opposition’s role, the EU integration, the safety issue and the electins. Gjiknuri and Moore discussed about the consolidation of independent institution and the reinforcement of the rule of law as the only recipe that guarantees long-term stability for Albania.
“The elections must have a calm climate; they must be free and honest. The USA will play their role in this direction”, Moore declared.
At the OSCE office in Washington Gjiknuri was welcomed by Mrs. Susan Bell, Director of the OSCE and international organizations at the State Department. This meeting focused mainly on the election issues, the electoral reform and the preparations for the elections of 2013. Gjiknuri asked an early monitoring and preparation of the election and the concern that the government must realized its commitments for preparing the election infrastructures.
Gjiknuri was also received by the Deputy Director of the International Criminal. Investigative Training Assistance Program, Mr. Gregory Ducot with him he talked about the US assistance in the justice and police area, and the problems in this sector.
Gjiknuri also had meetings at the Department of Defense, with the Operational Coordination Director for Southeastern Europe. The details of this meeting will not be public, but it seems that a special attention was paid to security and defense issues, including the problem of the parliament’s control on the Armed Forces.
