After the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Wess Mithcell, declared in Belgrade that Kosovo has the right to establish its military force, which was no threat to Serbs, has spurred harsh reactions in Serbia and abroad.
After meeting with Serbian President Vucic, who opposes the creation of Kosovo’s army, Mitchell said that the USA support the Kosovo-Serbia talks for normalizing relations, as he mentioned the much-debated army creation issue.
The Serbian Minister of Defense, Alexander Vulin, said that Kosovo can only have one armed force, the one guarantee by KFOR for peace-keeping, based on resolution 1244 of the Security Council.
According to Vulin, Kosovo’s army can be formed only through brutal force. “The creation of illegal armed forces is a threat for peace and stability for all Balkan”, the Serbian Minister declared.
The Russian Foreign Ministry also opposed the creation of the army, saying that it would make the situation even more tense.
