An official announcement from the US stated today that former Albanian president and Prime Minister Sali Berisha and his family, have been declared ‘non grata’ by the country.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has declared former President and former Prime Minister Sali Berisha and his family as ‘non grata’ in the US, stating in a Twitter message that Berisha and his corrupt acts have undermined democracy.
“I publicly declare Berisha and his close family members banned from entering the United States. We stand united against corruption with our partners in Albania,” said the US Secretary of State.
Other details about this punitive decision against Berisha and his family, mention the motivation for significant involvement in corruption.
“In his function as Prime Minister of Albania, Berisha has been involved in corrupt acts such as misuse of public funds and interference with public processes, using his power for personal gain, and enriching his political allies and family, at the expense of public trust in the Albanian government and institutions ”.
Another reason for this decision, says the US State Department, is related to the rhetoric used by Berisha to protect himself, his family members and political allies from independent anti-corruption investigations and accountable measures.
