US Ambassador to Albania Yuri Kim said today that the United States will cut ties with the opposition Democratic Party if it is headed by former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, who has been declared a ‘non grata’ by the US Secretary of State for major corruption.
In an interview with Top Channel’s Anila Hoxha, the US ambassador said that they could not imagine a scenario where she or any of her successors claim that everything is going well and associate with someone who has been declared non-grata by the Secretary of State.
“We will not engage with anyone who has been announced non-grata by the Secretary of State. This is a worldwide policy, it has nothing to do with individuals, but it is a general policy. It will not happen,” Kim told Top Channel.
Regarding the question whether the US supports the current chairman of the Democratic Party Lulzim Basha, the US ambassador said that the US recognizes the regularly elected Chairman of that party, while will continue meetings with him in the capacity of Chairman of the Party.
“We acknowledge the person regularly elected as Chairman and I will continue to go to meet Mr. Basha in his capacity as Chairman of the Party. As you can see, lawmakers and other visitors from Washington will do the same,” said Kim among other things.
