While the low temperatures in Albania are setting records, the country is experiencing frequent blackouts.
If until yesterday the energy lacked because of insufficient production, the reason today is the weak network that is unable to carry on the capacity of the significantly increased consumption. Even yesterday, the Transmission System Operator notified for further blackouts.
The state owned company is responsible for the lines, while CEZ is obliged to answer to the TSO requests for obligatory power cuts, according to Shqip newspaper.
“Even this Wednesday, due to the overloading of the Sharre substation, the TSO asked CEZ to make alternate power cuts for Kombinat, Yzberisht, Ndroq, Vaqarr and Mezez”, says the CEZ Distribution Company.
The Sharre Substation overload apparently also burdens the Selita Substation, and CEZ has been obliged to make alternate power cuts for Selite, Sauk, Kodra e Diellit, Vasil Shanto, Tirana e Re.
Other power cuts will be undertaken in the suburbs and villages of Lushnje, Fier, Vlore, Gjirokaster and Saranda, with half of the country plunging into darkness without previous warnings.
Sources at the TSO say that the blackout periods could last up to five hours, and these warnings are a task of the TSO. But since the state owned company lacks of the warning culture, CEZ has been obliged to notify the public opinion.
“The recent power cuts have happened because of the TSO, but since we are the distributors, it may look like our company is the cause of the blackouts. TSO manages the lines and every problem is solved by disrupting the electric power”, declared CEZ Tirana.
The Company also admits that there have been occasions when they were the cause for the power cuts, but they have announced it previously, with precise working periods.
Some experts say that this is a government maneuver for saving energy in a time of crisis, but the TSO declares that in parallel with the emergency situation, the government is making several investments, with the support of the donators, mainly in Southern Albania.
