Until the end against energy theft

The Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama, declared that the government is
determined to continue the fight against energy thefts, declaring that
the categories that pay energy more correctly are the disabled and
retired people.

“The biggest problems come from Tirana, Durres, Shkoder and Fier, where there is more economic activity. The intensification of this operation will continue there where there is more economic activity. That’s where we will continue cleaning with intensity, with the cooperation of the Distribution System Specialists, who have thieves among them, that’s why people rightfully say that they are the main cause of this. A corporation of thieves built not to serve the public, but to fill their pockets”, Rama declared.

Rama said that with the crisis that has involved the energy sector, the government had two options: removing the energy price limit or increase the basic price for everyone.

“We decided to remove the limit rather than increasing the price for everyone, but there is a condition. The condition is to understand that the removal of the limit will be enough only if we stop thefts. Otherwise, it will not be enough. My appeal for every citizen is that if we want to not be forced to make more painful choice, we must defend ourselves, the rule of law, our country and equality for the payment of every bill”, Rama declared.

The World Bank Director for Southeastern Europe, Elen Goldstein, encouraged the measures taken by the government to end energy abuses.

“How can this sector be stable if there are thefts. The government must answer for the investment and prosecute those who don’t pay. The companies must be held responsible for what they exploit and individuals for what they consume. The 300 KW limit has always been an element that has allowed abuses, and removing it is very necessary. The system will be able to be accessed even by the poor people and those who use it”, Goldstein declared.
