UNSC discusses Northern Kosovo

15/09/2011 11:00

The UN Security Council will discuss this Thursday about Kosovo, after
the tension that rose in the northern part of the country, on the verge
of the Kosovo government operation for extending its authority
throughout the territory.

Regional media say that the highest instance of the UN Organization will gather with request of Serbia and Russia, which supports its Balkan ally.

According to these same sources, the session will be held in the late hours of the night and behind closed doors, as requested by Western countries.

Serbia will be represented by their Foreign Minsiter, Vuk Jeremic, while there is no information yet about the Kosovo representatives.

The operation of the Kosovo government for placing Customs and Police agents at the border checkpoints 1 and 31 will start on September 16th.

This operation was planned by KFOR and EULEX, with the support of the Western ambassadors accredited in Prishtina. But it has been strongly opposed by Belgrade, which pretends that such a movement would break apart all negotiations.

The announcement for this operation has caused Mitrovica Serbs to place roadblocks in the roads that lead to north and to block the Iber River Bridge.

The road was blocked right after midnight, when the Serbs destroyed the security cameras placed in the area due to the strategic value of the bridge, which has frequently been transformed into the interethnic battlefield between Serbs and Albanians.

Rasmussen: Avoid tensions in north

The NATO General Secretary, Anders Fogh Rasmussen will visit Kosovo this Thursday, in the attempts for cooling tensions in northern borders .

The news came from the NATO spokesperson, Carmen Romero, who declared that Rasmussen will meet the Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci, the Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia Slobodan Petrovich and the Minister of Kosovo Special Forces, Agim Çeku.

“The NATO General Secretary will ask all parties to cooperate with constructive dialogue and avoid violence”, the spokesperson declared.

After Kosovo authorities, Rasmussen will meet the KFOR Commander, General Erhard Drews.

Kosovo Government’s announcement for extending authority in northern territories has spurred new tensions in the area.

Some Mitrovica areas, mainly the “Bosnians’ Neighborhood”, have seen movements of Serbian citizens placing barriers.

The operation of official Prishtina, prepared with the cooperation of KFOR and EULEX, also had the support of the USA, Britain and France.

The US Ambassador, Christopher Dell expressed his stance in favor of this operation. The French François Fitou and the British Han Cliff gave their declarations this Wednesday, during the meetings with the Kosovo Deputy Prime Ministers Hajredin Kuci and Edita Tahiri.
