Striking Albanian university lecturers have today threatened the government with hunger strike, if their demands for working conditions and salary increases are not met.
In a statement, the representative of the lecturers said that it would be undesirable to use the last resort as pressure on the government.
“It would be the most undesirable step to use a hunger strike. It is one of the democratic variants provided for in the constitution and laws of the country as well as in international conventions, and as such it can be used to exert appropriate pressure on the authorities so that they understand that the situation of higher education is a state of alarm”.
Educators started the new academic year with protests for better working and study conditions and salary increases, boycotting teaching in public universities.
With their open-ended protest, they are continuing to call for the fulfillment of their demands by the government.
The boycott was supported by the majority of lecturers in the faculties in Tirana, but there are also those who did not participate.
Despite the fact that several weeks have passed since the start of the new academic year, Prime Minister Edi Rama has declared that it is up to the universities to increase their own salaries for teaching staff.
