Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future After falling for one year and a half, the unemployment in Albania
increased again by the end of the last year. The latest official data
from the Institution of Statistics show that the unemployment in Albania
reached 13.29% in the fourth trimester of 2011.
According to INSTAT, the number of unemployed people by the end of December reached 142.950 people, ore 900 more than the third trimester. In fact, the number of employed people has raised, according to INSTAT, with 2500 people, from October to December.
But this growth was smaller than the increase of the working force, which reached more than 1.075.000 people from 1.072.000 that they were in the previous trimester. This made the unemployment figure to grow.
Albania has 165.000 people employed in the state sector and 260.700 in the private non agricultural sector. The biggest part is on agriculture, in which the government considers as employed every farmer that has a land. As result,. the agriculture employs 54.3% of the working force in the country, one of the highest levels in Europe and that in most cases is commented with suspicions not only by independent experts, but also by the EU institutions.
